Slug Problems in the Garden: Will We Face Another Slugmageddon in 2024?

Did anyone else have a massive slug issue last year? I felt like I was losing battle after battle every time I planted something. I usually see a few slugs here and there, but last year was just crazy—my entire bed of dahlias disappeared in days! I did some quick research and found that 2023 might have been a peak year for slugs due to the weather. Let's hope this year's conditions won't favor them as much!

I had to change my whole planting strategy last year. I went with more slug-resistant plants like fuchsias and bleeding hearts. Only have one dahlia this year, and I’m protecting it with sandpaper around the pot's rim.

Smart move! I’m thinking of doing the same since everything else I've tried has failed.

Haha, I’ve got birds to help too! They seem to do a great job cleaning up the slugs.

Totally feel you! Everyone I know experienced what I’m calling 'slugageddon' last year. The weather was just perfect for them, unfortunately. I’m hoping for a colder winter this time around, but it doesn’t seem like we’ve had enough frost to really make a difference.

Yeah, it’s been damp and cold for us too, but not frosty enough. Looks like we might be in for another slug-filled season.

The changing climate plays a big role here. Winters that are wet but not cold enough just let all those little critters thrive. Seems like every year we'll have a slug problem unless we get better conditions. It’s tough out there!

I know the feeling. Last year was a total loss for me, but now I'm just trying to prep for the fight ahead.
