How can I remove a rusted bathroom light fixture nut?

I'm trying to replace my bathroom fan light fixture, but I'm having a tough time with the nut at the base. It's so rusted it feels almost welded in place. I've used WD-40, but it hasn't helped. What are some effective ways to get this nut off? Should I just break the bowl if nothing works?

Using pliers can certainly help! I had a stubborn one that actually unthreaded from the top of the fixture instead of coming off. If it comes down to it, you could go for a destructive method on the nut rather than the bowl, especially if you’re planning to replace the whole fixture anyway.

You might want to try using PB Blaster instead of WD-40; it tends to work better on stuck rusted parts. Apply it and let it sit overnight. If that doesn’t do the trick, consider using a heat gun on low to warm up the area—it could help loosen the nut. If all else fails, drilling the bolt out or cutting off the nut might be necessary. Also, try adding a pipe over the end of your wrench for extra leverage; that can make a big difference.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll definitely try the PB Blaster and heat method first.

You probably won’t need to break the bowl. Try grabbing some pliers and working it back and forth to break the rust’s grip. It might take a bit of elbow grease, but it should loosen up without damaging the bowl.
