Choosing the Right Impact Driver for Woodworking and DIY Projects

Asked By CraftyNinja23 On

I'm stuck deciding on which impact driver to buy. I want something durable that won't break the bank since I'm just starting into woodworking and carpentry as a hobby. I've got some home remodeling in mind, plus a workbench and storage shelving for the future, and maybe even a chicken coop. I also might dabble in some concrete or masonry work later on, but nothing too soon.

I already have two M18 batteries with a charger and fan, so I'm thinking of sticking with that brand or looking at others that may be cheaper, even if it means juggling a couple of chargers. My current drill is a HyperTough, and it struggled during my first remodel project, so I need something better. Here are some potential options I'm considering:

1. DEWALT ATOMIC 20-Volt Lithium Ion Cordless - $170
2. M12 Fuel Brushless Hammer Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit - $230 + free tool
3. Ryobi HP Drill/Impact Kit - $150
4. M18 Compact Brushless Drill/Impact Kit - $200
5. M18 Fuel Impact Driver Kit with 3 5aH batteries - $270

Let me know which one you think is the best choice! Thanks in advance!

If you're not in a hurry, keep an eye on Home Depot because they often have sales on Milwaukee and Dewalt tools. Definitely a good time to snag a deal!

And if you are in a rush, check around Father's Day! They usually mark down all the tools for that event.

I'd definitely recommend DeWalt since I’ve had great luck with them. Once, I dropped my cordless drill off a ladder, and they repaired and returned it at no cost. That experience made me a lifelong fan!

Since you already have Milwaukee batteries, go for the Milwaukee Impact driver. Remember, you date the tool but marry the battery; once you start mixing brands, it's a hassle!

I started construction at a young age, mostly using DeWalt because my dad loved them. However, I switched to Ridgid for my garage shop thanks to their lifetime warranty, which I've used a couple of times. Milwaukee is also a solid choice if you're considering brands.
