Why is Sand and Dead Ants Coming from My Vents?

I've noticed that when my air conditioning kicks on, it blows out sand and even some dead ants. We previously had an ant infestation, but after using traps and spray, I haven't seen any ants around. Is this issue likely related to the ants, and is there any way to fix it?

When was the last time you switched out your filter? I ask because keeping it fresh can help with all sorts of issues.

The filter gets changed quarterly. We just had the condenser replaced, but this sand problem was happening before that.

Sounds like you might be dealing with carpenter ants. If there's a moisture issue, they could be munching on rotting wood and pushing it out with the air. I'd recommend getting an exterminator first, and then have your vents cleaned.

Thank you!

You definitely need to get your ducts cleaned. It's also a good idea to have them scoped to find out where this stuff is coming from. Check your air handler filters too. Generally, the cold air return is where you'd find wooden debris if there's any. If there are no filters or if there's a breach in your ducting, that could lead to the dust and dead ants you're seeing.

Will definitely look into this. We change the filter regularly, but since we bought the house after a remodel, the ducts might have been neglected.
