I had a toilet installed for my elderly parents, one of whom is partially paralyzed on the left side. I specifically told the contractor that we needed ample space around the toilet to accommodate a commode chair and ensure easy access. However, I didn't do my research beforehand, and now I'm realizing that the toilet is positioned way too far from the wall. The distance from the center of the toilet bowl to the side wall is 26 inches, and from the edge of the toilet bowl to the wall is 18.5 inches. I'm feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. You might want to look into using an offset flange. It can shift the toilet a few inches in any direction without needing major adjustments to the plumbing. But if you need to move it significantly, you may have to reposition the drain in the floor, and that could get tricky depending on what's underneath.
If the problem is with handrails or support, consider getting toilet safety rails. They can really help. And if accessing toilet paper is the issue, look into specialized holders that can fit better in your space.
It’s a wet toilet, so a standing toilet paper holder won’t work for us. The chair option could be a solution, but I'm really bummed about this. Thanks for the help!
