I'm considering upgrading my old Stanley Defiance chisels from the 40s because their handles have shattered. I keep my chisels super sharp and primarily use them for carving and paring—though I don't use them as much now that I'm not working on violin repairs. I'm on the lookout for a budget-friendly option in 1/4", 1/2", and 1" sizes. The Narex Classic Bevel Edge Chisels set I found costs $57 for three. Is there something better out there for the price?

They’re decent, but you might find they’re just average chisels. The best alternatives in this range would be cheaper Chinese brands, but you'd likely need to replace the handles. They also have a longer design which might not be ideal for beginners. Overall, you’re getting what you pay for at $57 for three.
Honestly, for the price, I don't think there's anything better unless you go vintage. If you want a step up, check out Ashley Isles or Narex Richter for better quality.
I have these chisels, and I really like them! Some folks have mentioned issues with the handles, but I haven't faced any problems myself.
I've been using that set for over 15 years, and if the quality is still the same, they're pretty solid! Definitely a good value if you're looking for general-purpose chisels.
