I recently had a driveway installed for our home, which has a long dirt road. We received two quotes: $27k and $31k. Trusting my husband's judgment, we chose the $27k contractor. They promised to install 3 inches of gravel and 3 inches of minus gravel on top, plus some ditching, and a parking pad—all good stuff! But when the work started, they only laid down a layer of massive rocks and didn't finish the other parts. Now they claim it's done, but it's not what we agreed on. My husband is okay with this, but I'm furious since it's my money. The contractor keeps making excuses and wants to charge more for what was already quoted. Should I take charge and demand they finish as promised, or just pay and accept this subpar job? I'm also considering legal options because they refuse to speak to me directly.

Don't pay them anything more! Take over the project because it sounds like your husband might not be willing to confront the contractor. They are taking advantage of you. If they refuse to fix it, consider taking legal action if needed.
Absolutely no more payment until they correct their mistakes. You should document everything in writing going forward. If they don't comply, start looking for other contractors to get quotes for proper work and consider taking them to court. Their excuses sound fishy, especially if they delivered the wrong size rocks.
Check your contract first. Demand that the contractor completes the job as per the agreement. They are in breach of contract, so no more payments until they remedy the situation.
