Should I Ask for Permission or Just Build My Pergola?

Hey everyone! I'm new to my neighborhood and I'm considering building a pergola in my backyard. However, I just found out that this might violate some covenants set by the developer. Do you think I should go ahead and ask for permission first, or would it be better to just build it and hope nobody enforces the rules? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Do you actually own the land? In some places, it feels like you don’t own much at all anymore, especially near urban areas. It's frustrating! But if you can, definitely at least ask around. Sometimes a friendly chat with neighbors can save you from a lot of hassle.

Honestly, I think skipping the permission could be risky. It really depends on how strict your neighbors or the management are. You might end up having to tear it down, which could cost you a lot more in the long run. I'd suggest checking with your neighbors first to see if they’re cool with it, and then talk to the association with their support in hand.
