How to Get Engineering Drawings for Solar Permits in California?

I'm doing some deep research for a solar power system for my home in California. Local vendors have quoted me around $25k for a ~4kWp setup with a single Powerwall, but my calculations suggest I could put together a 5.5kWp system using EG4 gear and battery for just $15k, which sounds fun! However, I've hit a snag—how do I get the necessary engineering drawings for permitting? I know some companies like 'Unbound' provide these drawings with their kits, but I'm looking for more affordable alternatives. Any ideas?

You should definitely touch base with your local officials to find out exactly what kind of drawings you need for your permit. For example, I got a septic permit in California with just a quick sketch done by hand on paper at the Planning Department—it took only about twenty minutes! That might help you find a low-cost solution.

If you’re interested, I charge $100 per plan set, and it’s another $100 if you need electrical stamps for your permits. I can help you out with that if you're looking for something professional.

I actually created my own plans from scratch for a 5.5kWh system that cost me around $1200, and since I'm in the country, I didn't need any permits because it's fully off-grid. If the area you're in has less strict rules like that, it might be worth considering.
