Is it Safe to Partially Cover an Air Vent with Furniture?

I'm redoing my bedroom layout and I want to place my desk in a new spot, but that means I would have to put my bookshelf over an air vent. The bookshelf has legs that leave some space for air to flow, but I'm concerned about any potential hazards. I don't care too much if it affects the heating or cooling since that corner doesn't really get any airflow anyway, but I've heard that blocking vents could lead to ventilation issues or even mold. Is it okay to partially cover the vent like this?

Using a vent deflector can also help. They’re inexpensive, around $7 to $10 at places like Home Depot or Amazon, and they’ll ensure that the air flows out into the room rather than getting trapped under the bookshelf.

You might want to check out air vent extenders designed for furniture. They're pretty affordable and can help direct airflow better. I found several options easily online that should work well for your setup.

It's probably okay as long as you aren't blocking the vent completely. If your bookshelf has 6-inch legs leaving airflow, you should be fine. Just make sure not to let anything else—like clothes—fall in and block it. A simple humidity meter can help ease your worries about moisture and mold.
