I just moved into my parents' basement to save up before the baby arrives. I'm planning to remove this really old carpet that's been down for about 30 years before I start framing for drywall. The air quality is a bit concerning since there's only one window that opens, and my wife is pregnant. I don't want to risk exposing her or our cat to dust and toxins. What precautions should I take, and how long should we stay out of the basement after pulling up the carpet?

It's smart that you're thinking ahead! Definitely hang plastic sheeting to contain the dust while you work. Place a box fan in the opening to exhaust air outside and slightly crack that other window. Just make sure to turn off the HVAC system so that air doesn't circulate through the ducts. After you pull up the carpet, I’d suggest waiting at least 24 hours before going back, to let any remaining dust settle.
Honestly, the amount of dust is not going to be huge if you cut the carpet into smaller sections as you remove it. Just be sure to vacuum the area before you start and mop it after to catch any dust that might linger. It’s usually a one-day job, and just keep your wife and kitty out while you do it. Make sure that window is a safe exit, though!
Totally agree! Just watch how you pull it up; be gentle to avoid sending dirt flying everywhere.
If you're really concerned about dust, consider renting a HEPA air scrubber to run while you work and for a day or so afterward. That can really help clean the air while you're pulling that carpet up! Congrats on the baby, by the way!
Good call on the air scrubber! It's worth it for peace of mind.

We did something similar recently, and the plastic sheeting and fan combination worked wonders in keeping the rest of the house dust-free. Definitely give it a shot!
