Best Wood Types for a Kitchen Shelf?

Asked By SunnyBreeze99 On

Hey everyone! I'm working on building a custom shelf for my kitchen since I don't have much counter space - it's a rental with pretty tight layouts. I plan to use it for my rice cooker and coffee machine, but I'm unsure about the best type of wood and joinery methods to use. I want it to look good since the cabinets are white and I might paint it a dark color. Any suggestions? Thanks a ton!

It might be helpful to think about what the rest of your kitchen looks like. Since the cabinets are white, maybe a contrasting wood like walnut or a darker stain could really pop in there!

Totally! I just want to avoid a plain white shelf in a white kitchen.

I just made a shelf out of walnut, and I can't recommend it enough. It looks stunning and is super sturdy! For the rice cooker and coffee machine combo, it should easily handle the weight. Just make sure to use good joinery to keep it solid, especially in a high-use area like the kitchen!

That walnut shelf looks amazing! I'm definitely considering it if it can hold that much weight.
