How to Propagate My Bear Paw Plant?

Asked By CactusCraze69 On

I've got a bear paw plant that's pretty happy, but it's gotten a bit stretched out. I'm thinking of cutting it down and trying to propagate it from the stem since I've only ever propagated from leaves before. Does anyone have tips on how long I should leave the stem to callous before planting, and what watering guidelines I should follow once it's in the soil? Thanks so much for any help!

When propagating stems, make sure not to water them until they've developed roots. Here’s what you should do: cut the stem, let it callous over for a day or two, then plant it in fresh, dry, gritty soil. Place it somewhere sunny and be patient while it roots! It's pretty straightforward.

I appreciate the tips! Do you recommend using any specific type of soil for this?

A cactus or succulent mix works best, but if you can’t find that, just make sure it’s well-draining.

Check out the propagation wiki for more details. What I’ve learned is to let the cuttings dry on a paper towel or piece of soil until they grow roots before you plant them. It really helps in the rooting process!

I've seen people share advice on r/propagation and r/proplifting as well. They usually suggest letting the cut part sit until it roots before putting it into the soil. It works like a charm!
