Why Do I Smell Rotten Eggs Only in My Bedroom?

Asked By CuriousCat99 On

I've noticed a strange rotten egg smell every time I move or turn my head, and it's happened for two nights now. The odd thing is that it's only in my bedroom and doesn't seem to spread throughout the rest of the house. Our house was built in 2004, so I'm wondering what might be causing this smell at night specifically.

You really should check for a gas leak. The rotten egg smell comes from an additive called mercaptan that's put into natural gas to help detect leaks since gas itself is odorless. Check your water heater, stove, or fireplace. If the smell is strong, get out immediately and call your gas provider or 911.

Definitely! It's better to be safe than sorry. A slow gas leak could be really dangerous.

That's what I was thinking too. I'm just curious why the smell is limited to your bedroom.

It could be a sign of a slow gas leak, but I'm also wondering about your drywall. There were issues a while back with some drywall imported from overseas that had a sulfur smell. Have you done any renovations recently?

Yeah, that could be the case! Did you have any drywall work done recently?
