Can I Enjoy Woodworking Without Sanding Pads?

I'm really interested in starting woodworking, but I've noticed that a lot of projects mention sanding as a key part of the process. The issue is that I can't handle the sound and feel of sanding pads or sponges; they make me cringe like nails on a chalkboard. I'm wondering if it's possible to dive into woodworking as a hobby without using those types of sanders. Are there specific projects that would be better suited for someone like me? Thanks for any guidance!

You might want to try card scrapers instead; they can give you a nice finish without the noise and discomfort of sanding pads. Many woodworkers use them for that reason. Plus, they can speed up the process and reduce dust, so that could work well for you!

Yeah, I totally agree. Using a hand plane and card scrapers makes a big difference. Sanding can often be avoided with those tools.

Exactly! I'm not a huge fan of sanding either, and scrapers really help me out.

Consider traditional techniques like Japanese woodworking, where they don’t rely on sanding at all. Instead, they use super sharp smoothing planes which could be a fun challenge and also avoid the discomfort you're experiencing with sanding.

That's a fantastic idea! Spoon carving is also an option; it’s satisfying and avoids the sanding issue.

Absolutely! There’s a lot of beauty in those old methods.

If you don't want to use sanding pads, try using an orbital sander. It works great for most projects, and you can tackle a lot of surfaces without needing a sponge. Just be cautious with fine details; those might require more care.

Right! But just start with basic projects and see what works for you. Don't stress about the details right away.

Thanks for the tip! I think I'll stick to larger projects for now.
