Is My BeaverCraft Knife Dull or Is the Wood Too Hard?

Hey folks! I just got a BeaverCraft wizard carving kit, and I'm a bit surprised by how much pressure I need to apply when carving. It seems like the knife isn't sharp enough out of the box—definitely not sharp enough to shave my arm hair! I bought a strop to maintain the edge for my little projects, but I'm also curious if the wood that came with the kit is on the harder side. I didn't see any information regarding the type of wood included, which is a bit of a letdown on my part. Any insights?

Yeah, it’s a bummer, but BeaverCraft does have a reputation for their knives not being sharp enough. I had a sloyd knife from them that was basically useless until I heavily modified it. The wood is likely basswood, which generally is good quality for carving, so it’s probably the blade that's the issue.

Sounds like I’ve got a lot to learn with these tools.

If you're looking for beginner tips on carving and whittling, I highly recommend checking out 'Carving is Fun' on YouTube. They have great basic projects and techniques. A lot of beginners start with carving a fox or even a simple mushroom, which helps get you used to the knife. Also, check out channels like Mary May for sharpening tips and Doug Linker for more advanced projects!

Unfortunately, BeaverCraft knives are known for being dull right out of the box. If your knife can't even shave hair, it's definitely not sharp enough, and a strop alone won't fix that. You really should consider getting a sharpening stone to get that blade up to par!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into getting a stone.

Yeah, I've had similar issues. Their blades can fold under pressure, too. Might want to switch to better tools if you keep having trouble.
