I'm renting and something bizarre just happened with one of my toilets: it drained itself super fast and made a deafening sound that made me think a water pipe exploded. I was in another room when it happened! Everything inside the tank seems fine and there aren't any leaks. The weather isn't bad either; it's not windy or stormy. I'm really worried about a potential flood in my basement, but if I put in a maintenance request without a clear issue, my landlord might charge me hundreds just to check it out. What should I do?

It might be worth checking if your city is doing any flushing of the sewer lines nearby. It can create pressure changes that suck water out of your toilet and p-traps, which could explain that explosive sound. Keep an eye on it!
I received a notice about this from my city, warning about potential issues during line flushing. It's easy to overlook, so definitely pay attention!
I’d recommend letting your landlord know what happened and see how they want to handle it. But make sure to elevate your belongings in case there is a flood. It’s their house, so it’s ultimately their responsibility, but you're right to be concerned living in the basement!
I totally get that! It’d still be my problem if anything happens since I live down here. There’s only so much I can elevate too!

That definitely sounds like something to check into. If that’s the case, would it affect all your toilets or just the basement one?
