How Can I Get Rid of Fungus Gnats Without Toxins?

I'm dealing with a serious fungus gnat problem in all my plants. My husband suggested covering the pots with plastic wrap as a method to kill them, but I'm not sure if that really will work. We already have sticky traps in place, but the gnats are still persistent. I understand that we need to eliminate the eggs and trap the adult gnats, but I'm looking for non-toxic solutions since I have a toddler, a dog, and I'm pregnant. We plan to repot after we manage to get rid of these pests, but I'm not sure what the best approach is. Should we kill the gnats first and then replant? I could really use some help, as this situation is driving me nuts! Thanks in advance!

Try using mosquito dunks as a tea to water your plants; it's a selective, non-toxic insecticide that targets gnat larvae. You only need a small amount—just mix some in a watering can and let it sit for a day before using. You can easily find them online for around £7. I've had good luck with this method!

I totally agree, those work wonders! I usually crush mine up and mix them into the topsoil instead of dissolving them, which I find more effective since I tend to forget to prepare it ahead.

The issue is typically with your soil, as gnats thrive on the fungus from decomposing plant matter. A good tip is to pour some hydrogen peroxide over the top of the dry soil—it helps eliminate what's breeding there. If you're repotting, consider switching to a soil with fewer organic components, as products with lots of manure or compost can be a feast for gnats. Use those types of soils outdoors instead!

So I'm guessing you're saying to avoid organic soil? I actually bought some but I might return it now. Will the peroxide really kill the eggs? How should I apply it? Also, any tips on how to deal with them in other rooms? They've started creeping into the bathroom and kitchen.
