Should I Be Worried About Past Asbestos Exposure in My Home?

Hey everyone, I'm feeling really anxious about our potential asbestos exposure. We lived in a house from the 1950s for about six months, and while we didn't do any major renovations, we did some things that make me nervous. We drilled into the walls to hang TVs and pictures, which might have disturbed asbestos. There was also a small water-damaged area in the basement that I patched and vacuumed up without thinking. Additionally, I brushed a popcorn ceiling in one bedroom and vacuumed over some old, possibly asbestos-containing tiles in the basement. Now I'm worried that we've been breathing in asbestos dust for months. Should I be concerned about our level of exposure or health risks?

I used to do asbestos work back in the day, and while it's serious stuff, your exposure sounds pretty low. Most illnesses come from long-term or heavy exposure. For things like DIY projects, just be cautious—especially with popcorn ceilings. If you suspect a material has asbestos, get it tested before doing anything. Most everyday exposures aren't harmful as long as you take care. No need to panic right now!

That makes sense! I guess just being careful is key, right?

Honestly, many people have been exposed to asbestos and haven't had serious health issues. I know someone whose grandpa got mesothelioma, but he was in a steel mill and much older. If you're worried, maybe just check in with a doctor for peace of mind. In general, casual exposure like what you described isn’t likely to cause major problems.
