How Do I Handle Mold Under My Toilet?

Asked By HomeFixer89 On

I recently bought a house, and while replacing a toilet on the second floor, I discovered that the flange was installed incorrectly, causing the subfloor to rot and mold to grow underneath. I removed all the old flooring, and now I'm not sure what to do next. Can I just scrub the mold, cover it with Kilz, and patch the subfloor, or should I consider professional help? I'm also a bit anxious about what I might find in the walls below. I received a remediation quote for $3500, which includes demo (which I'm already doing), three days of drying with a negative pressure seal, and handling the mold. Is this quote reasonable?

Hey, don’t stress too much! Mold is definitely manageable. You can start by wiping it down with a wet cloth to remove the surface mold. After that, let it dry, and then spray some Lysol before you do your repairs. Should be good to go!

That's a relief! It seems like the leak has been around for a while, so I'm wondering if I need to check the walls below too. Should I deal with that later?
