I'm considering building my first bed and have a question about using furring strips as slats. If I incorporate a center support beam and a leg underneath for stability, do you think furring strips would work well for supporting a queen mattress? I like this idea because I can get 20 eight-foot boards for around 50 bucks. I'd use the remaining length for some decorative elements on the footboard and headboard. I'm planning on using about 20 slats with less than an inch gap between them. The bed will be for two people, weighing a total of around 300 pounds. What do you think?

I actually have a bed with slats similar to what you're planning, though they’re spaced about 3" apart instead of 1". Just make sure that your center support beam is really sturdy when setting it up!
Yeah, those furring strips should work just fine! You might want to space them a little further apart if you're comfortable with that.
True, but honestly, I’d feel a bit nervous replacing the current frame if something goes wrong while we’re sleeping! ?

I think I might go a bit overboard and grab some 1x4's instead! I can always cut them down to size. Planning on using a solid 2x4 as the center support with a leg positioned right in the middle for extra support.
