Hey everyone! I'm working on a project for my art class where we need to create something related to our passions. Since I love gardening, I'm excited to dive into grafting, specifically with different apple varieties. I haven't bought the trees yet, and I'm looking for some advice on how to get started. What's the ideal size for the trees, and does it matter if the rootstock or scion wood is active or dormant? Also, can I repot them into larger pots around the same time, or would that put too much stress on the trees? Any additional tips or techniques for grafting would be greatly appreciated! Just a heads-up, I've never grafted anything before, but I've propagated a few different plants before. Thanks a lot!

Grafting is definitely a fascinating process! Just a heads-up, grafting is usually a year-long endeavor, but since this is for an art project, you won’t need to worry about fruit production. Focus on showcasing the grafting methods and the healing process instead. As for the size, smaller trees can be easier to manage, especially for a beginner like you. And yes, consider that both rootstock and scion wood can be dormant for grafting; it might actually work out better! Good luck!

Thanks for clarifying that! I wasn't sure if the size made a big difference. I guess I’ll go for smaller ones and focus on the grafting techniques instead!
