So my neighbor has a fence right on our property line, and there's absolutely no space between it and our yard. We really want to put up our own fence, but the neighbor is not interested in sharing any part of it—even though we're happy to split the costs or anything! They simply said it's their fence and they're not open to discussions. I'm unsure how to proceed. Should we install our fence right against theirs, risking future maintenance issues? Or would it be better to give up part of our yard to have some space in between? I'm totally at a loss for what to do!

Honestly, if your neighbor's fence is already there, maybe you don’t even need a second one! But I get it—if your property is a perfect square and the neighbor’s fence only covers part of it, you still want to secure your entire yard. Just make sure you’re clear about where your property line actually is.
If there's really no space between the two fences, you might want to check the property line again. If the fence is right on it, then you could own half of that fence according to property laws. It might be worth getting a surveyor to clarify the boundaries!
One option could be to set your fence posts about a foot off your property line. This way, you can hinge a small section off your fence, ensuring that no part of your fence touches theirs. That could also help with security while avoiding any disputes over property lines.
