Creative Solar Panel Ideas in Tight Spaces

I'm looking for innovative solar panel placement ideas since I've hit the limit with what my wife wants for our solar setup. I prefer a DIY approach without permits, and I currently use a 50 amp generator transfer switch to cover about half of my energy usage (around 70 kWh/day). I have 15 400-watt panels installed along my south-facing fence, but now I'm exploring more unusual placements for solar panels. I'm not interested in building structures like gazebos or carports; instead, I'm thinking along the lines of flexible panels on fences or even deck railings. I live in an urban area with limited ground space (0.4 acres) and I'm hoping to find inspiration from others who are in a similar situation, especially those who have had to be innovative with solar panel placements to satisfy their partners!

I'm thinking about trying a tilt-up installation over my windows, similar to Bahama Shutters. My windows get a ton of sun, and I usually have to cover them anyway during the summer. Why not harness that sunlight for energy? It won’t suit every window, but I'm hopeful!

That sounds awesome! I have a southern wall that gets great sunlight too, and I'm planning to run a row of panels there when I re-insulate my place. Can't wait to see how it works out for both of us!

That's a cool idea! Just be cautious about how much weight you add for the tilt system; safety first!

If you're considering alternative placements, how about replacing any old wooden fences with solar panels? In Europe, it's actually cheaper over a 20-year period, even if you don't connect them. Just make sure they get plenty of sunlight! I have mine on the roof of my house and I'm looking to add more on my garage soon. But, since my place is historic, I have some restrictions.

Vertical dual-sided panels on a fence could be a game-changer! They get sun from both sides and maximize usage, especially in a tight space. If you can manage that, it's definitely a smart move!
