I live in a two-story house with a large crawl space, and I've noticed that when anyone walks around on the first floor, it creates a really loud thumping sound. There are no squeaks—just the thumping noise with every step. I'm considering going into the crawl space to install some support using 4x4s, or maybe putting sheathing like plywood on the underside since the insulation is just exposed right now. I'm looking for suggestions on how to minimize this noise so I can keep my sanity! Any advice?

You might want to teach your kids to take off their shoes and walk more softly. It can really help reduce noise! Adding sound-dampening materials like rugs or carpets could also make a difference. Remember, big open spaces tend to echo, so anything to break up the sound would help too.
Check the type of insulation you have down there. If it's typical fiberglass, switching to denser material like rockwool could help. Also, if the subfloor is thin, adding an extra layer of plywood or OSB glued to the bottom (not below the joists) might help minimize the thumping sound. You could try this in a high-traffic spot to see if there's any improvement.
One solution is to double up the joists or attach 2x4s flat to the bottom of the joists for better support. You could also add posts mid-span to stiffen the floor significantly. Those methods can really help reduce the thumping noise!

This sounds similar to what I was thinking! Appreciate the input!
