Is a Benchtop Drill Press Worth It Compared to Freestanding Models?

I've been thinking about getting a drill press since I can no longer tolerate imprecise drilling. I have space for one, but I'd rather not bolt a freestanding model to the concrete floor. I'm curious about what I might miss out on if I go for a high-quality benchtop model instead of a freestanding one. I get that the benchtop has limitations like less height adjustment and potentially less power, but I'm not sure how significant these factors really are. If I'm not planning on drilling through metal, does power still matter? How often do I actually need more vertical clearance than a benchtop provides? Thanks for any insights!

I own a Ryobi benchtop model that's basically a smaller version of their full-size ones. If you want to maximize capabilities, a full-size 15 amp motor is the way to go. That said, I've used various sizes, and the smaller ones are good for softer woods with about 1-inch forstner bits. For tougher woods, you'll want to stick to 1/2 or 3/4-inch bits. Overall, it works well for larger bits and metal projects too!

Isn't that the 5-speed model? I'm eyeing some drill presses myself but am drawn to variable speed options even though I'm not sure how much they help with woodworking.
