I'm a DIY newbie trying to understand a water leak I've encountered. This morning, I found water leaking on the main floor of my two-story house, specifically right below the shower wall. The weird part is that I haven't used that shower in the last 24 hours. After some heavy snowfall, the sun is now shining down on the roof, which has me suspicious about an ice dam. However, the leak is on the main floor and about ten feet from the exterior wall, right in the center of the ceiling. What steps can I take to figure out what's causing this issue?

First off, if you see ice on your roof, that might be a clue. Ice dams can form and cause water to back up and leak into your home. Check if there's visible ice on your roof and around your downspouts. If you suspect an ice dam, you could also try running a hose down the top of the downspout; if water drains out, that could help confirm it’s not blocked. Watch out, though! The leak coming from the middle of your house can be tricky—it might not seem related at first, but it could still be connected somehow.
Since you mentioned a thin, straight line of leak approximately a yard long, that might be indicating there’s a crack or some sort of damage. If you're sure it's not from your shower, then look closely at both the ceiling and the roof structure. Ice dams can create pressure that could push water into areas where it shouldn’t go, but a leaking pipe could just as easily be the issue. If nothing else works out, maybe consider calling a pro to help you track it down.
