Is It Normal to Pay Extra for Cutting Down an Interior Door?

I'm wondering about the pricing for getting 1/4 inch trimmed off my interior door so that it fits properly. I've been quoted for two separate services by the installation company: one for installing the door and another for cutting it down. Is this common practice? Do doors usually come prepared to fit, or is it typical to need to shave some off? I really don't have much experience with home improvement and just want to know if these charges are reasonable or if I'm being overcharged!

It seems weird they'd charge separately for cutting it. When you pay for installation, it usually includes making sure the door works in the space you have. Just doesn't make sense otherwise.

If you’re feeling unsure about the pricing, definitely get a few more quotes. The fees seem odd without knowing the actual amounts. If it’s two $50 charges, that’s different than two $500 charges!

The quotes are actually $160 and $140. They installed the door, but it won’t close right.

Yikes, sounds a bit high to me!

It all hinges on whether they measured your space properly or just assumed the door would fit. If they didn't, that could explain the need for adjustments.

Honestly, that should definitely be part of the installation fee. If the door doesn’t close, it seems like they didn’t do their job right. I’d suggest contacting your bank or credit card company to dispute the charge if they continue to charge you for something that should be included.

Exactly! Just because they nailed the frame and hung the door doesn't mean it's installed properly if it doesn’t function.

Totally agree! It’s like a plumber charging for both cutting a pipe and then installing it—kind of absurd.

A planer's not too expensive and might be within your reach, but don't pay them for shoddy work. They should have handled this during installation.

You should only be charged one price for the complete job—removal and installation. If they have to shave off part of the door, that indicates a lack of proper measurement beforehand.

What the heck? If they installed it, it should work properly! If they didn't fit it right, don't pay them to fix their mistake. This should’ve been done during installation—no extra charges for that.

I would ask them how they installed a door that doesn’t close. It's like ordering food with missing parts—totally unacceptable.
