How Hard is It to Replace a Garage Door Opener?

I'm considering replacing my garage door opener because it's acting up. Lately, it's been making strange noises and will only open about two feet before reversing back. I've had to pull the cord to close it manually. Since the opener seems old, I want to know if replacing it is something I can do myself or if I'd be better off hiring a professional. If you have any tips or advice for someone who's reasonably handy, I'd appreciate it!

Replacing a garage door opener isn't too tough, especially since most come with clear instructions. Just lay everything out before you start! But before you rush into buying a new one, check a few things first: Have you lubricated the rollers and chain? Are the springs in decent shape? Sometimes it's something minor that a good tune-up could fix instead of a full replacement.

I once had to replace the worm gear in mine when it stopped moving. Ended up calling a garage door pro to fix the orientation since I couldn’t get it right after replacing parts. He had it sorted in minutes and charged me for it too! Talk about feeling helpless!
