Should I Use a Fuse Between My Solar Charge Controller and Battery?

I'm setting up an MPPT Solar Charge Controller (40A, 12/24/36/48V) to charge a 48V 100Ah server battery with two 450W panels. I've come across some tutorials suggesting that I should use a fuse in this setup, but I'm unsure if it's strictly necessary and what size fuse would be best for my system. Any insights?

Using a fuse is definitely a smart move! I have a DC breaker for my charge controller, and it's super handy when you want to shut things off without disrupting everything else. Consider adding one!

Thanks! I'll think about putting one in.

It's best to place a fuse as close to the battery as possible for optimal protection. That way, it protects the entire system effectively.

If you're connecting multiple batteries in parallel, it's crucial to use breakers for each one. If one battery shorts out, the others can get damaged too. A breaker will trip and save the others. As for sizing, you'll want to check your battery's max discharge and charge ratings, then pick a breaker slightly higher—around 220-250 amps for heavy-duty batteries. For your setup, considering it's a 5 kWh battery, I’d estimate needing a breaker around 80-100 amps. Just double-check your specs to be safe!

I hadn't considered the risk of shorting with parallel batteries, thanks for the heads-up!
