Hey fellow gardeners! I'm relatively new to gardening and I've been using Miracle-Gro shake and feed regularly for my vegetable garden, along with adding compost at the end of the gardening season to help break it down before planting next summer. Recently, a family member expressed concern about my use of Miracle-Gro, so I did some research and found that it may lead to soil quality depletion over time. Since I'm adding compost to my soil, does that help mitigate the downsides of using Miracle-Gro, or should I consider switching to organic fertilizers instead?

Soil science is pretty complex, so you might get a lot of opinions! Basically, the concern with synthetic fertilizers like Miracle-Gro is that they can alter your soil's pH, which disrupts the important microbes and fungi that aid in breaking down organic matter. But honestly, I think the fear around synthetic fertilizers is overhyped. Using them occasionally is fine; just don’t rely on them year after year. I'd suggest you start mixing more organics into your routine, but don’t worry too much—you haven't ruined your soil or anything. Just wean off the synthetics gradually while integrating organics.

Thanks for the reassurance! I had no idea it could be detrimental long-term, but I'm ready to make some changes now.
