How Can I Save My Succulent’s Pup?

Asked By CactusCrafter92 On

I recently got a succulent and left it for about three weeks without anyone to take care of it. When I returned, the main plant was dead, possibly due to overwatering as I'm still learning how to care for them. However, I noticed that its pup is still alive and I'd like to save it! Should I leave it attached to the plant or cut it off and replant it? Also, I'm going to be away again in just four days, so I need some quick advice. Any tips on how to care for the pup would be greatly appreciated! Just to clarify, the white objects in the pot are only decorations and not part of the plant.

You should definitely snip off the pup and place it in some dry, gritty soil in a small pot. Make sure the soil is fresh and well-draining. It's actually a sempervivum, which isn't really suited for indoor living—this could explain why the main plant died. So just give the pup a chance in a sunny spot!

Totally agree! Sempervivums prefer the outdoors where they can get plenty of sunlight and can thrive in changing temperatures. If you can, try to acclimate it outside slowly after your last freeze.

I’d recommend cutting it and planting it right away. These plants love gritty soils, so a mix that drains well is key. Keep it outside during the day if you can, as they typically do much better that way!

Thanks for the tips! I'll make sure to find that perfect mix and get it outside after I return!
