I just moved into a house and my garden's lawn is about 80% weeds and dandelions. Since I've only lived in flats before, I'm really new to gardening! I want to keep the lawn instead of putting down turf. My plan is to weed it out to have more grass, then I'd like to plant some flowers around the edges, like forget-me-nots, grape hyacinth, and maybe some lavender in pots or in the ground. I live in South Wales and I'm quite unsure about soil quality and gardening techniques. Any tips for a novice gardener looking to improve this lawn would be greatly appreciated! I'm really missing the gardening wisdom of my grandma who loved to care for plants. Happy to share pictures if that helps!

You might want to consider alternative ground covers, like creeping thyme or clover. They're low maintenance, support pollinators, and when dandelions pop back up, they can actually help out the bees! Additionally, getting a variety of bulbs that flower throughout the year can keep your space looking vibrant.
Honestly, since you're renting, just mow it down and keep it simple. You can enjoy a nice-looking lawn without spending too much money. If you want a few pots for flowers, go for that instead. It's not worth it to go all out on someone else's turf!

That sounds like a great idea! I love the idea of mixing in some herbs and flowers too.
