What Size Disconnect Switch Do I Need for My Solar Panels?

Asked By SolarSquirrel42 On

I'm looking to install a quick disconnect switch for my solar panels to easily disconnect them from my charge controller. This way, I can keep them wired and just flip the switch to start charging the batteries when needed. I have a Renogy 30 amp charge controller and currently own one 100-watt panel, but I plan on adding at least two more. What size breaker should I use for the cutoff switch? If I choose a larger one, will it be okay to run just a single panel until I get the others?

It's best to get a disconnect switch rated for a bit higher amperage than what you're planning to run. Since you have a 30 amp charge controller, look for a disconnect that’s around 35 amps or so. A product like this one on Amazon should work well for you!

Will that setup still work smoothly with just my single panel in the meantime?
