Is the M18 Surge a Good Upgrade in 2025?

I've been using the Gen4 M18 Fuel impact driver for about two years. While I appreciate the power, I actually find it to be too intense for my needs, as I keep it on speed 2 most of the time. Because of this, I've been relying more on my older Dewalt brushed impact driver, which feels more versatile and solid in comparison. I'm considering switching to the M18 Surge instead since it seems lighter, smaller, and has a more ergonomic grip. However, it's been out for about six years now, so I'm wondering if an update is on the way. Also, I'm curious if it has the same collet issues that the Gen3 experienced. I plan to use it mostly with a 2.0 or 5.0 battery, and I've noticed a lot of positive feedback about the Surge from others. What do you think?

Honestly, if you feel the Fuel is too much, the M18 Surge could be a great fit! It’s designed for more finesse, so it's easier to manage in tighter situations. And with the advancements in the newer models, you should find it easy to use for small screws. Just make sure to adjust your technique, and practice makes perfect! Plus, most users still recommend it despite the age because it really excels in some use cases particularly with softer materials.

It sounds like you're dealing with a classic case of power management! The M18 Surge definitely can feel less powerful than the Fuel impacts, which might work better for your daily tasks. If you're worried about it being outdated, don't stress too much—it's still a solid tool, and many people like it for its quiet operation and precision. There hasn't been any official word on a new version coming out soon, so it’s a good time to snag one if you want it! Just remember to learn how to handle that trigger for better control.
