Should I Trust This Contractor Who Refuses to Sign a Contract?

I'm dealing with a contractor who's been in the business for 40 years, and he seems pretty offended by my request for a contract. He claims he's never had to sign one and that everyone is happy with his work. He also mentioned I could pay him in cash to dodge taxes, which raises some red flags for me. The price is really competitive, but his whole attitude makes me uneasy. Given my time constraints, should I reconsider and keep looking for someone more reliable?

Sounds like a classic red flag. If he's not willing to sign a contract, that's concerning. Contracts protect both parties and ensure there's a clear understanding of the work to be done. Plus, the cash payment suggestion is a major warning sign. I'd seriously think about moving on to someone who values transparency.

Honestly, if he's been operating this way for 40 years, that's impressive, but it doesn't mean it's the right choice for you. If he's that confident, he should be fine with putting things in writing. I'd recommend looking for a contractor who offers a proper contract. It's just not worth the risk, especially for significant amounts.

I get that the price is tempting, but you have to weigh that against the potential problems. If he and his sons are doing the work, you want something in writing that holds them accountable. Maybe try checking his references thoroughly before deciding what to do. Better safe than sorry!
