Why isn’t my garage cooling down with new insulation?

I recently added R15 batts to the walls of my garage here in Houston, but I'm not really noticing much difference in temperature. I have a small portable A/C unit rated at 11,000 BTU, and my garage is about 462 sqft, but it only cools down to 85 degrees. The walls are 8ft tall, but I haven't installed drywall or a ceiling yet. I'm also planning to add rubber vinyl siding around the garage opening to seal gaps that range from 3/4" to 1/2". Will these additional insulation efforts improve the cooling? I thought the insulation I've put in so far would have a bigger impact than it has.

Insulating your garage ceiling could make a significant difference! Since heat rises, if you only insulate the walls, a lot of heat will still accumulate where it matters most. Definitely tackle that ceiling next!

I’ve seen people manage to keep their garages really cool by insulating walls and using mini-splits, but it does help to have the ceiling done first! Good luck with your project!
