I recently replaced two sides of our backyard fence and I'm considering whether to stain or paint just my side of the wooden fence to protect it. Is this a good idea, or will only painting one side damage the fence in some way? I haven't made up my mind whether to go for paint or stain yet. Any advice would be appreciated!

It's not the best move to paint or stain just one side of the fence. For starters, you're not fully protecting the entire fence, which could lead to uneven wear and moisture issues. Plus, it might not look great from the outside. If you do opt for stain, go for a penetrating oil like Penofin Red—it's easier for touch-ups since you won't have to sand it down every time.
Once you start painting or staining, you'll need to keep up with it regularly. I highly recommend doing the entire fence if you own all of it, not just half. That way, you avoid uneven wear and make sure it looks nice all around. It’ll save you hassle in the long run!
