Is it Safe to Move HVAC Ducts Above the Joists in My Basement?

I'm currently renovating my basement and the frame was originally built around the HVAC ducts. I was considering moving them above the joists to save space and improve the look, but I'm wondering if that's possible and safe. I found an example where ducts are run through the joists, similar to this: https://imgur.com/a/DBfq5QP. Is this a common practice? I appreciate any advice!

Moving your HVAC ducts above the joists isn't really advisable because the joists are crucial for supporting your home's structure. If they're cut or altered to fit ducts, it could compromise that support. Instead, you might want to explore running them through the joists if your setup allows for it, just like in your example.

Exactly! Keeping the integrity of the joists is key. Consider consulting a professional or following building codes to ensure whatever you decide is up to standard.

I mean, sure, you could run the ducts through the joists as shown in your pic, but ensure they’re properly secured and insulated. Just cutting the joists isn't a good idea, so maybe look into proper framing methods for your ducts if you want them tidily tucked away!
