Last night, during a massive thunderstorm in my area, I was jolted awake by an incredibly loud boom that sounded like a truck crashing into my house. After the thunder, I was shocked to hear my garage door (the one for cars) opening on its own. I got out of bed to investigate, and sure enough, the garage door was open with the light on. Has anyone else ever had their garage door open due to a storm like this? Or could that thunder actually be a sign that lightning hit my house? I checked around, and thankfully, there doesn't seem to be any exterior damage. Any thoughts?

I've not heard of that happening either, but it's conceivable! A loud boom could rattle the house enough to accidentally trigger the manual button or, if lightning was close enough, it might even cause some sympathetic arcing in the circuit, opening the door momentarily. Strange things happen during storms!
Honestly, lightning could trigger your garage door. These doors are pretty sensitive to interference, especially from electrical surges. It's crazy what a loud noise or nearby lightning can do! Just make sure everything is secure and check for any potential electrical issues.
You might want to check for loose wires in the garage door unit or switch itself. Sometimes a disturbance can cause these to react unexpectedly. It’s worth giving them a little tap or jiggle to see if you can recreate the issue and rule that out.
It's possible that a close lightning strike could have opened your garage door, but it's pretty unlikely. Strikes can sound like a cannon going off, and in some cases, nearby utility issues like a blown fuse could create a similar sound without affecting your door. When I worked for a power company, we had weird instances where power fluctuations caused strange things to happen with people's equipment.

Thanks for the info! I’ll definitely keep an eye on it just in case.
