Best Beginner Tool Sets for Relief Carving?

Hey everyone! I'm new to wood carving and started with whittling last year. Now, I'm looking to dive into relief carving and I've been researching tool sets. I think mallet tools are the way to go for me. I'm considering the Flexcut 6 gouge set and the Pfeil 6 gouge set, but the Pfeil set lacks a V tool, which I hear is pretty essential. Also, the Pfeil is pushing my budget limits, and I'm not sure I can afford to buy extra tools later. What's your take on beginner tool sets? Would the Flexcut be suitable for someone just starting out?

Furthermore, as a newbie, I'm trying to keep my costs down. The little relief carving I've managed has been on cheap craft plaques from the dollar store. Is this okay for practice, or should I invest in higher-quality wood? Any advice would be appreciated!

Honestly, if you're just starting out, I'd recommend looking into a set of Schaaf chisels. They’re a great bang for your buck and a decent alternative to Pfeil, often made with good steel. I've tried them myself and was pleasantly surprised! Flexcut is nice but better suited for whittling than for traditional relief carving in my opinion. Just remember, getting your tools sharp is key! Many newbies give up because they struggle with sharpening, especially the V gouge, which is super important. Definitely consider picking one up! Here's a link to the Schaaf set I found: [link]. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask more questions!

Could you suggest a good video or guide on how to sharpen chisels and gouges? I'm worried I might mess them up since I've only used flat blades before! Also, what makes you recommend against Flexcut for relief carving? Thanks a bunch!
