What should I do after a roofer took my $3000 check and vanished?

I hired a young guy who claimed he had a crew to help with my roofing job. I gave him a $3000 check to buy materials, but now he keeps making excuses for not getting them. My roof leaks every time it rains, and he's starting to ghost me. I'm already tight on funds and really need this fixed. I have paperwork showing our agreement, a canceled check, and text messages from him. I'm disabled and don't know where to turn for help. Any advice?

This is a rough situation, and I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Just keep in mind that people can be pretty cruel, especially to those in tough spots. Getting a police report might not solve everything, like getting your money back, but at least you’ll have taken action. Stay strong and maybe reach out to local organizations that help in situations like this. You deserve support!

I really feel for you, it’s a tough situation. Honestly, you should start preparing to file a police report because it looks like you probably won’t see that money again. Scammers often target people who are in need, and it really sucks. It’s a hard lesson, but in the future, try to work with legitimate contractors and always get a contract. And in the meantime, you might consider using tarps or something to cover the leaks if you can.

Exactly! It's so unfortunate, but you gotta look out for yourself. Let’s hope you can get something sorted soon.

Honestly, this is just rough. For what it's worth, a lot of people have fallen into similar traps. Just remember to take everything as a learning experience. As for repairs, do what you can in the short term to manage the leaks until you can get something better sorted. Hang in there!

It sounds like you might have been scammed. The best step now is to report this guy to the police. When dealing with contractors, always make sure you have a signed contract before handing over money. It might not get your money back, but it could prevent him from scamming others.

Yeah, definitely file a report. It's tough to deal with, but protecting others is important too.
