I'm curious about the best way to measure long distances more accurately when using string since it can get a bit spongy. For instance, I think the slack in the string over 30 feet might add up to about half an inch, which could be important for precision work. I'm currently trying to set up a 345 triangle to plot a straight line from a fence on one side of my yard, but using a measuring tape has proven tricky. How do others manage to deal with this issue?

Stretchy string can definitely throw off your measurements. One trick is to use a laser distance measuring tool instead, but just a heads up, they tend to struggle in bright daylight. I usually take my readings at night when visibility is better. Keeps things accurate without the wait for string to tighten!
Using a laser measure is the best option here! Just make sure you're not trying to use it outside in direct sunlight, as it won't work well in those conditions. It's a wildly accurate way to check distances without the hassle of string.

Good to know! I'll consider timing my measurements for evenings.
