Need Advice on Selling a Shop’s Worth of Tools Before a Move

Hey everyone! I'm facing a tough situation and could really use your advice. I have to move out of my home due to a serious mold problem that my landlord isn't addressing. I'm going from a one-bedroom place with an attached garage to sharing a room in a house with roommates. My family graciously offered to store some of my tools, but I'd rather not impose on them with the full load, especially since I'm unsure when I'll be able to set up my own workshop again in the future.

I plan to keep my grandmother's tools because they're special to me, but I have a lot of other equipment and some lumber that I've collected over the years. I'm wondering what the best approach is to sell all this stuff. Should I sell it as a big lot or piece it out individually? I'm located in Seattle and aware of some second-use shops, but I'm not sure if they would buy from me. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

If your family can offer storage and maybe even a small workspace, take that option! Often, family helps each other out with these kinds of things. You could pay them back by making things or just sharing some beers. Selling your tools should really be the last resort; it might be more convenient to hold onto them for now until you find a new place.

That’s a valid point! I’ll discuss it with them and see what’s possible.

Selling everything as a lot might be tough since most people don’t need a full shop's worth of tools. I’d recommend posting your larger items and grouping smaller ones together on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. While it may take more effort, you’re likely to get better prices that way. You could also consider selling the lumber as a batch if it makes sense!

Great thought! I'll definitely consider that route.

You might want to list the tools individually in your ads and mention that you have more stuff for sale. This way, if someone is interested in multiple tools, they can reach out to you for a package deal. Also, hobbyists often look for specific tools, so you could get better prices selling individually rather than as a bulk lot. As for the lumber, you might find someone wanting a variety for their projects, so keep that in mind!

Thanks for the suggestion! I think that’s a good idea to attract more buyers.
