Just Moved In and Found a Rat – Need Some Rodent Control Tips!

Hey everyone! I recently moved into a new house in the Bay Area and was thrilled that after fumigating and getting checked for rodents, we were given a clean bill of health. However, after leaving behind a previous home that had a mouse issue, I was hoping for a fresh start. Just yesterday, my husband found a giant rat in our yard, which is totally unexpected! We want to avoid what we dealt with at our last place. We made a quick run to Home Depot and picked up some traps and peppermint spray, but I'm looking for any extra tips or advice on how to handle this. Should we call in another pest control service, or can we handle it ourselves first? Thanks so much for any help!

It’s crucial to close off any holes properly—way more important than any pest control products you might buy. Make sure to inspect your home thoroughly!

Thanks! We're on top of that and have already sealed a few spots.

So, just to clarify, are the rats inside or outside? If they’re outside, there’s only so much you can do to get rid of them completely. Remove food sources and use snap traps—stay clear of poison! Keeping your lawn short and eliminating hiding spots can really help too. If they’re found inside, you’ll want to call a pest control expert. They can pinpoint entry points like the roof and base of your house. Once they patch those up, trap the inside to catch any stragglers! Peppermint spray and noise emitters just won’t cut it—rats are clever and want shelter more than food.

Hey! They’re all outside. Thanks for the tips! Quick question: Why should we avoid poison traps?
