Hey everyone! I've noticed a gap above most of my windows, about half an inch at its widest. I'm using LP Smartside for siding, and I'm wondering if that gap is intentional, maybe for expansion, or if it's something to be concerned about? I have a picture of it here: https://imgur.com/a/lxU0fnX. Thanks for your input!

Yeah, the gap is necessary according to the LP Smartside guidelines. They actually recommend a smaller gap, like around 3/8", but your gap sounds like it’s still within the acceptable range. It’s there to accommodate natural expansion and to prevent moisture issues, so don’t stress too much about it!
Honestly, unless you're experiencing leaks or other problems, I'd say just leave it as is. Some people do caulk underneath during the installation, but generally, you don’t want to seal these gaps completely. Let it breathe!
That gap is actually designed to help manage any water that might get behind your siding. It's a good thing! There's metal flashing that should be positioned behind your water barrier to direct any water that does slip in back out, preventing it from sitting behind the trim or getting trapped. So as long as it's installed correctly, it's supposed to be there!
Got it! Just to clarify, caulking shouldn't be applied to this gap, right?

Exactly! Just making sure it stays clear is better.
