Is This Mold in My Shower a Big Deal?

Hey everyone!

I just moved into a new house and noticed a small crack in the grout of my shower niche within the first week. I decided to shut off the shower and remove the bottom tile since it was slanting backwards and needed fixing anyway. Now I've found some mold growing, but I have no experience with this. Does it look serious? Should I be replacing anything upfront, or can I just put a fan on it for a week and then tile over it?

Here's a link to the image for reference: https://imgur.com/a/NcgEVpX.

I'd really prefer not to tear everything out if I can avoid it. Thanks for any advice!

Honestly, I can barely see the mold you're mentioning, but it might be worth picking up some mold spray like Concrobium from a home store just to be safe. One thing to keep in mind though: that exposed 2x4 is a bigger concern. Tiling directly over wood isn’t a great idea in the long run, so you might want to seal it properly first.

If you can see the mold, then yeah, it's definitely a concern. Mold spores can be invisible, so visible mold means there’s likely a larger issue at play. I’ve been using RMR-141 lately instead of Concrobium or Mold Armor, but be careful with it—it’s super strong and needs some time to air out. You might want to act on that sooner rather than later.
