I'm currently dealing with an attic that reaches 112°F, even though it's only in the high 80s outside. I've attached a photo of my attic here: [https://imgur.com/a/yDrlblV](https://imgur.com/a/yDrlblV). I've got a fan in the attic, but I suspect it might need upgrading. I also store decorations and some winter gear like sleds up there. I'm worried about the insulation since I can see the top of some of the joists. If I find that I need more insulation, can I use 2x4s and more plywood to raise it above the joists?

But isn't insulation just a myth for summer heat? I feel like people have wild misconceptions about what insulation does...
Honestly, I think adding insulation can really transform your space. When we topped up ours, it made a huge difference in our cooling bills during summer and heating bills in winter. After we increased our R-value from around R30 to R50, we noticed that upstairs temperatures leveled out. It was definitely worth it!
I'd definitely recommend sealing any air leaks and adding more insulation if you can swing it. It’s a lot of work, but your home's comfort will thank you! And a home energy audit sounds like a smart move – you might find some financially beneficial rebates to help with the costs.
Yeah, I scheduled one with my local electric company too! I'm curious what they'll suggest.
Hey! The first thing to check is local building codes. For Maryland, you should be around R-49 for attic insulation. If you can see the top of the joists, that likely means you need more insulation. What's the type? If it's blow-in, just reaching the joists isn't enough. If it's batt insulation, adding another layer could definitely help! Using 2x4s to set up a deck in the attic for storage is a feasible idea, just make sure it’s safe and secure!
Thanks for suggesting checking codes! I’ll look into R-values for my area.

Nah, I’d have to disagree! I definitely noticed a difference in my house after insulating. It keeps the heat out during those summer days!
