Can I Use 1/8″ Wood Sheet on Plywood for a Tabletop?

I'm planning to make a tabletop using a 1/8" red oak sheet glued with contact cement onto a 3/4" plywood base. The final size of the table will be 38" by 38". Is this a crazy idea? What tips do you have for ensuring this project goes well? I'm doing this because I need a new table, and I have materials just sitting in my garage that I want to clear out to make room for other things.

You're looking at a veneering project here, and it's definitely doable! Just make sure to lightly sand both surfaces before applying glue. I recommend using wood glue like Titebond 3 instead of contact cement for a stronger bond. Once glued, place something heavy on top to keep everything flat while it sets for at least 24 hours.

Don't forget to cover the underside too! It's crucial that the whole assembly is symmetrical to prevent warping over time. If you've got a frame underneath for support, that can help, but balance is still key!
