Is it okay for my neighbor to cover their fence with black plastic?

My neighbor decided to cover the inside of his board-on-board fence with black garbage bags to block anyone from looking into his backyard. The fence is around six feet tall and about 25 years old. Since all sides are still exposed, could this affect the air circulation and sunlight that comes through the slats? I'm concerned about the potential impact on my side of the fence. Thanks for any advice!

Honestly, it's a six-foot fence, so air will still flow over and around it, and the sun will reach you too. Maybe just try to let your neighbor enjoy their privacy. By the way, this topic might fit better in a homeowners' discussion rather than woodworking, just saying!

Thanks for your input! I’m more worried about the fence itself rotting than anything else. I’d definitely consider paying for a solution if it helps!

If you're part of an HOA, they might step in and make him remove it. If not, and it's his property, there's not much you can do. If it's your fence, you could politely ask him to take them off, but if he’s not cooperative, legal action could be your only route. Just a heads up: covering it like that might trap moisture, leading to mold, bugs, and rot.

A six-foot fence shouldn't block enough light and air from the slats to really affect your quality of life. Just keep in mind that if those bags trap moisture, it could speed up the rotting of the fence. But given its age, it might be reaching the end of its life anyway. At least you won't see into his yard now, right?
